A Most Non-American American: A Memoir of Assimilation

How would you react if a friend called you "a most non-American American." Was it meant as a compliment or something else? For me, the comment led to taking an inventory of all the experiences and opportunities that the United States of America has provided me with over the years. The unusual arc of my professional experiences, especially while in the Department of Defense, had a profound effect on my long-term outlook as an American. Only in America does a kid from a small parochial town in India find innumerable doors open to him that might well have remained closed in other countries. The resulting pride and enthusiasm it created for me in my adopted land has no parallel elsewhere. And that is what this is. A record of that pride. A few anecdotes from the life of this New American.
