Their wide-ranging impact on 20th- and 21st-century architecture is presented in 16 chapters which each focus on a core Deleuzian/Guattarian philosophical concept and one key work of architecture which evokes it. Challenging the idea that a concept or theory defines, then produces the physical work and not vice versa, Chris Smith positions the relationship between Deleuze and Guattari's practical philosophy and the field of architecture as one that is mutually substantiating and constitutive. In this framework modes of architectural production and experimentation become inextricable from the conceptual territories defined by these two key thinkers, producing a rigorous discussion of both the theoretical and practical application of their ideas. Further outlining the proximity and operability within which architecture and philosophy cohere leads to a radical analysis of the events and meaning made manifest in architectural works. The idea of architecture as a material reality first and foremost is conclusively found wanting in the explication of concepts including 'sympathy', 'assemblage' and 'schizoanalysis', which reveal the highly experimental and essential nature of the interchange between Deleuze, Guattari, and architecture today.
